Ramadan, also known as the month of Ramadhan, is a significant time for Muslims. It originates from the revelations in the Islamic holy book, the Quran, where it is believed that in 610 CE, during the month of Ramadan, the Prophet Muhammad received revelations from the archangel Jibril (Gabriel), instructing him to spread the teachings of Allah as His messenger.

The essence of Ramadan lies in its spiritual significance, offering Muslims a chance to seek steadfast faith and inner peace. Socially, it’s a time to pause the collective emotions accumulated from worldly affairs, allowing society to reflect on the righteous path guided by faith.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, refraining from eating or drinking, and observing other religious practices. Fasting is meant for atonement; abstaining from food and desires during the day, immersing oneself in religious devotion, and cleansing the soul of impurities and sins. This period is marked by focused reading of the Quran and prayer, engaging in self-reflection and enlightenment to embrace the spirit conveyed by Allah.

Ramadan is also a sacred month of charity, introspection, and self-discipline. Its significance extends beyond fulfilling religious duties to cultivating character, controlling desires, empathizing with the poor, and fostering compassion. It provides Muslims with an opportunity to practice self-control and purify their souls.

Following Ramadan is Eid al-Fitr (Idul Fitri), a celebration as grand as the Chinese New Year. After a month of fasting, almost all Muslims return to their hometowns to celebrate with family. Many Muslim children of age also undergo circumcision during Ramadan or Eid al-Fitr, marking an important rite of passage in their lives.

In summary, Ramadan is a special moment in the Muslim faith, a time for fulfilling religious obligations and an opportunity for spiritual growth and community bonding.

The Muslim Tourism Association Taiwan (MTAT) has often organized activities and trips during Eid to celebrate together, and in 2024, we are closely collaborating with Muslim religious groups to plan exciting events. Those interested can look forward to it.
